Colonel Tye and the Black Loyalist Movement in Monmouth County : MONCO, Register by June 12th

Virtual (online)

Colonel Tye and the Black Loyalist Movement in Monmouth County : MONCO
6:30 PM
He is perhaps the greatest military leader you have never heard of. Join historian Greg Caggiano for a look at the life and legacy of Colonel Tye, a man who escaped enslavement in Monmouth County and returned as the head of his own fighting force during the American Revolution...on the British side! Learn the heroism, drama, and human element of war in this exciting story and fight for freedom that took place right in our own backyard.

About the Presenter: Greg Caggiano is a published author, historian, lecturer, and consultant. He holds a degree in history from New Jersey City University and NJ State teaching certifications in history and elementary education. Since 2014, Greg has worked as an instructor for Brookdale Community College in their Lifelong Learning department and as a field guide for their Ocean Institute on Sandy Hook, which focuses on local marine life, maritime history, and the history of the U.S. Military’s presence at Fort Hancock. In his spare time, he has served on the Board of Directors of two museums: the Proprietary House in Perth Amboy, and most recently the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society, housed at the Strauss Mansion Museum. A firm believer in volunteering and giving back to the community, he has helped fundraise tens of thousands of dollars for historic preservation over the years.

This session will be conducted on Zoom and is free of charge. Registration and internet access are required to attend. Register below to receive emailed information on how to access the conversation. Registration closes on June 12 at noon; Zoom access link will be emailed later that day.

Summer Encore Virtual Author Talk Series: Geraldine Brooks : MONCO 10:30 AM

Virtual (online)

Summer Encore Virtual Author Talk Series: Geraldine Brooks : MONCO
10:30 AM
June is New Jersey's Month of the Horse! Celebrate with an exciting virtual encore chat with award winning novelist, Geraldine Brooks in conversation about her most recent New York Times Bestselling novel Horse.

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

New York City, 1954. Martha Jackson, a gallery owner celebrated for taking risks on edgy contemporary painters, becomes obsessed with a nineteenth-century equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance.

Washington, DC, 2019. Jess, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia, and Theo, a Nigerian-American art historian, find themselves unexpectedly connected through their shared interest in the horse--one studying the stallion's bones for clues to his power and endurance, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success. Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington, Horse is a novel of art and science, love and obsession, and our unfinished reckoning with racism.

About the author: Australian-born Geraldine Brooks is an author and journalist who grew up in the Western suburbs of Sydney, and attended Bethlehem College Ashfield and the University of Sydney. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in fiction in 2006 for her novel March. Her first novel, Year of Wonders, is an international bestseller, and People of the Book is a New York Times bestseller translated into 20 languages. She is also the author of the nonfiction works Nine Parts of Desire and Foreign Correspondence.

The Private Lives of the Impressionists by Susan Roe

The Private Lives of the Impressionists follows an extraordinary group of artists into their Paris studios, down the rural lanes of Montmartre, and into rowdy riverside bars. It casts a revealing light on this unparalleled society of genius colleagues who lived and worked together for 20 years.
